A Pathway to Success

Connor’s journey into the electrical trade was unexpected but rewarding.  Originally studying ICT at college, his career path changed when the COVID-19 lockdown put his studies at risk.

Fortunately, his father, a key worker and electrician at Igne, brought him to work during the lockdown to assist with ensuring our domestic and commercial clients, relying on private water supplies, remained safely supplied.

Working alongside his father, Mark, sparked Connor’s interest in electrics.  Encouraged by Igne’s water wells director at the time, who welcomed him with the words, "You're welcome to join us - just don't break anything!", Connor made the leap into an electrician apprenticeship.

Since then, he has never looked back.

Learning and Growing with Igne

Connor is currently in his final year of a Level 3 Electrical Installations course at college in Newtown, Powys.  His apprenticeship at Igne has given him exposure to real-world applications beyond the classroom, making him a valuable asset to the company.

“In college, I learn the science and maths behind electrical work, including concepts like Fleming’s Left-Hand Rule,” Connor explains. “But at Igne, I get hands-on experience in areas we don’t typically cover in college, which bridges the gap between theory and practice.”

Connor has worked closely with both his father, Mark, and fellow electrician James.  He has also had the opportunity to support our drilling teams on-site, gaining a broader understanding of how electrical work integrates into the drilling and commissioning of water supplies.  "It was a bit muddy," he admits, "but I got to see the whole process, and the drillers are great teachers."

The Benefits of Apprenticeships

Connor’s story highlights the mutual benefits of apprenticeships for both apprentices and the company:

For the Apprentice:

Practical Experience: hands-on learning enhances theoretical knowledge.

Looking Ahead

Connor’s ultimate goal is to become a fully qualified electrician and continue growing within Igne.  "You never know, maybe I’ll be my dad’s boss one day!" he jokes.

At Igne, we recognise the immense value of apprenticeships in shaping the next generation of skilled professionals.  Connor’s journey is just one example of how investing in apprentices benefits both individuals and businesses alike.
